Tina M. Dudney, MD Named Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education & Designated Institutional Official at UTGSM
The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Tina M. Dudney, MD as the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) effective October 15, 2023. Dr. Dudney has served as the Interim Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education and DIO since January 1, 2023, succeeding William P. Metheny, PhD, who retired after a 37-year career in medical education.
"The Graduate School of Medicine is very fortunate to have someone with Dr. Dudney's extensive clinical, education and institutional experience take this role, and I am delighted to have my colleague of 35 years join me on the Deans' Council as the leader of graduate medical education on our campus," said Dr. Robert M. Craft, Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine.
Dr. Dudney brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. She completed her undergraduate degree at Tennessee Technological University and received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Following her Internal Medicine residency and a PGY4 Chief Resident year at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, she completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Returning to UTMC as faculty in 2002, Dr. Dudney quickly became an integral part of the institution's academic landscape. As a Program Director, she oversaw the development of the Pulmonary Disease fellowship program in 2007, expanding it to include Critical Care Medicine in 2015, as well as a recent increase in fellowship complement. Her extensive scholarly activities, including numerous book chapters, journal publications, and national and regional presentations, reflect her commitment to academic medicine. She is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine and Division Chief for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. In addition to her roles within the institution, Dr. Dudney has contributed to public health as the physician member of the State of TN Respiratory Care Board and was active in the region's response to the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the East Tennessee Regional Health Department COVID-19 Crisis Standards of Care Task Force. Recognized for her teaching and clinical excellence, she has received prestigious awards, including the RA Obenour Jr Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014 and the RA Obenour Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2018. Dr. Dudney's clinical expertise encompasses critical illness in pregnancy, medical ethics in the ICU, and the integration of medical education into the clinical learning environment.

"Aligned with the transformational leadership of Dean Craft, I look forward to supporting the expansion of academic excellence in our graduate medical and dental education programs, increasing collaborative opportunities in research and discovery, and assisting in the integration of undergraduate medical education on our campus as we promote exceptional, equitable and accessible healthcare for our community and all Tennesseans."
